Dealing with fire damaged cultural heritage
- It is possible to reduce some of the fire damage to books. This should be done by a trained conservator. To remove the smell after a fire, stand the books, fanned out, and leave for at least 24 hours.
- Broken glass on framed items should be taped to prevent any further breakage or damage to artwork. The glass can then be removed if safe
to do so, if not consult a conservator of qualified preventative
conservation framer.
- Smoke damaged valuable textiles or paintings should be treated by a conservator. Non valuable items can be cleaned at home with clean demineralised water using cotton buds to gently wipe the damaged areas.
- However, it is recommended that testing take place at the edge of the works of art.
- Objects and artefacts may be gently cleaned with clean water but, if possible, a conservator should be consulted before any action takes place.
- Broken artefacts should be carefully collected and taken to a conservator. Conservators do have the skills to reassemble broken items.
